JRsSeoulAdventure stands for Jaime & Rachel'S Seoul Adventure.

Hi.

After 2 months since we came back, i'm finally gonna write about this trip. and share some tips about travelling in Korea and budget tips too. /exhales/ -LEGGO!-

-before i start, i'd just like to say that every single expense i spent on the entire trip was all my savings after working my butt off for 4 months during the holidays. It was super duper fulfilling even though i overshot my budget, but NO REGRETS! My mother was initially opposed to me and Rach travelling alone when we're like only 16 but when there are dreams, there are ways.-

Rach and I talked about it near the end of our Sec 3 year, to go to Korea by ourselves once we graduated. I had my doubts whether it was even a realistic goal but yeah, we worked hard for it (so many part time jobs i tried in 4 months)and it was worth the trip. Here goes~

TIP #1: Plan in advance, settle flight, lodging, budget and itinerary. (IMPORTANT!!!)

We did our planning 2 months ahead, calculated costs and listed down the places we wanted to go. What a long long list, it was. We went searching around Chinatown (where the travel companies hoard) and got somewhat of an awesome travel deal. 8D6N Seoul and Jeju + complimentary 3D2N in Shanghai. and for $1600 SGD. We obviously bought it being students on a tight budget.

Honestly we didn't even care about the flight transfers and whichever hotels we stayed in, just being in Korea was so rejuvenating and fresh i could live anywhere in Korea and be happy forever. <bucketlist>

So we flew on a midnight flight and transferred at shanghai to Incheon.

The airports were comparable of course. Incheon is obviously better :/ We arrived in the morning and went to the catch the AREX train from Incheon Airport to Seoul Station. We had our itinerary for the day all planned out and guess what happened? The ETUDE HOUSE right beside the AREX platform caught my eye and we ended up spending an hour and lots of money right there. Which screwed up the schedule a little. (I shall call our itinerary a 'schedule' like idols do) Yup so i caused us to be late.

Finally, SEOUL! I was literally so happy and i gulped in the air that oppas breath. We booked a room in Chungmuro on booking.com and headed there through the Seoul Metro.
Let me also mention that most metro stations are underground and they don't have lifts, so we carried our freaking hulk luggages up and down the stairs (for 3.5 days F&E) and then we fainted. Sometimes really nice Korean would lend us a helping hand and it felt really nice.

TIP #2: DON'T PACK EXCESSIVELY, IT'S A BAD IDEA

Then we couldn't find our guesthouse even though the directions said it was 2 mins walk from the station. Then we asked for directions and no one knew so we took a cab and ended up at a wrong guesthouse. BUT WITH THE SAME NAME. (the cabbie took us to the wrong place, CABBIES ARE EXTREMELY STUBBORN)

TIP #3: When cabbing, you have to be firm with them about your location because apparently; many places(restaurants/guesthouses/hotels) have the same name.

<We had a bad experience and got super frustrated with cabbies there that we walked on our own and asked for directions the rest of our F&E days. They go in circles and insist that they're right and then get frustrated with you and drop you off at some random place in the fucking middle of the night and you still have to bleeding pay them. ughh.>

We winded up at the wrong place but they still took us in, thank god. All the luggage lugging was the worst.

Freshened up and continued with our schedule, which was to go to Petite France and The Garden of Morning Calm. Both places were at the other side of Seoul and the journey to&fro was about 3.5 hours

-_-

TIP #4: GET MAPS, WHEREVER YOU GO. You'll need it if you can't speak much Hangul. (IMPORTANT!!!)

TIP #5: Bring a travel phrasebook and learn the basic greetings, buying, eating, direction vocab etc.

It's good to know in advance! If all else of communication fails, use google translate or gesticulate; use pictures/images/words, or say the english name of the place in a syllabic way. Korean people are smart and they'll try their best to help you, even if they're busy. <3 their kindness.

Directions to Petite France / Nami Island / Garden of Morning Calm:

1) From Myeongdong/Chungmuro: Take Line 4 (sky blue) to Dongdaemun Station.

2) Transfer at Dongdaemun to Line 1 (dark blue) to Hoegi Station.

3) Transfer at Hoegi to the Gyeongchun Line(aqua green) to Cheongpyeong Station or Gapyeong station.

(Alternatively, transfer at Mangu Station from Sangbong/Hoegi toward the Gyeongchun Line.)

The Seoul Metro is really easy to navigate once you got the hang of it. tbh its the best metro in the world bcos free wifi and you can eat in there, as long as you keep it clean. They also announce the station name in many languages so that's a bonus. The train arrival bell song is also the cutest jingle ever.

<not my pic, credits to owner>
This is the timetable for the Gapyeong Circle Tour Bus, it works in two directions but you have to be really punctual. We barely caught it before it left. Tickets are 5,000W each and you can reuse it to board throughout the day to go around the different attractions:
  1. Gapyeong Bus Terminal
  2. Jarasum Camping Site
  3. Gapyeong Subway Station*
  4. Nami Island*
  5. Geumdae-ri Hall
  6. Petite France*
  7. Cheongpyeong Bus Terminal
  8. Cheongpyeong Subway Station*
  9. Imchogyo Ap
  10. Garden of Morning Calm*

The bus looks like this
<not my pic, credits to owner>

At Cheongpyeong (청평) Station, Take Exit 2 and you will see the bus stop in front of the station. From Gapyeong, i'm not too sure which exit to take, but just ask around and you'll find it!

And then the crisis came, we didn't have enough time to visit both places, we had to choose < OMO:( >.  GOMC was in You're Beautiful and Petite France was in so so many.(YWCFTS<3 , Running Man, Secret Garden, Beethoven Virus and Bang&Zelo's MV) It was an obvious choice. and i was in love with YWCFTS (J's recommended kdrama!)

</ Basically our F&E itinerary was made up of touristy places not in the tour and settings used in our fav Dramas.>

PETITE FRANCE

Candid Rachel

the Little Prince is everywhere!

This cute little boy was like following me around then he smiled adorably at me and then when i was "aww~" he ran forward, stepped on my red mary janes and ran off. it was awk but hilarious and his parents just looked on fondly and giggled. i was like wary of him after :x

Cute souvenir shop

Petite Ice Cream that was overpriced, but we didn't realise then XD (abt $5 sgd :\)

i went forward to help a family take a pic and they took for us~

ㅋㅋㅋㅋㅋㅋ

SELCA WORTHY WALL!
spent so long here just selca-ing :D

its so dainty and cute, not sure whether it's french-y though

another pic that a couple helped us, and we helped them.

mini-performance that we missed while selca-ing ;x

the running man jail area!

we practically selca everywhere, anytime in Korea

ayy boy

JunHong probably posed with the Prince too, indirect touch hm? (along with millions of people and actors/idols)

RE-ENACTED THE YWCFTS SCENE!!! srsly loved that drama<3

TIP #6: Don't be afraid to take selcas and as many pictures bcos you're a tourist so go ahead, Korea loves tourists. Memories are the most important.

hi there /pedo noonas

Hyun Bin's sequin jacket

i was crying and hugging the wall, don't look at me

perf family haha

Rachel found her relatives~

found other korean girls squealing too and took for them and VV.

it's such a dainty place and still much to be explored. The weather was perfect too.

magically awkward
Majimak goodbye to catch the bus~

And then on the long journey back, we decided to go to Sinchon for the 8,000W BBQ Meat Buffet restaurant for dinner. Aaaand it was fully booked obviously the shop ahjumma's face was like "what are you even doing here without a reservation??? pfft." (it was dinnertime TT_TT)

Looks like this! It's called 연대껍데기 Yondae Kkeopdegi.
The Yellow sign is the keyfocuspoint.
<pic cred to owner>
See this (Kgonju's) post on what we missed out and directions on how to get to the most fulfilling meal in Sinchon. Unlimited refills to samgyeopsal, hanwoo and chicken and everything you need. MUCH REGRET. (yoohoo meat-lovers!)

Nevertheless we had to eat (only had Paris Baguette bbang) and we settled on this restaurant which had like hot stir meals (idek what they call it)
Potato Cheese and Chicken Thing

It was average, spicy and unfulfilling :/ and overpriced, but we're so naive.

TIP #7: Check for pricing properly before going into the shop/restaurant. They will make you spend there, there is no other choice. These people know how to guilt-trip you because they are so hospitable and welcoming.
you know it's a korean mart when you can find everything you need in a home.

Met Dara unnie on the street~ o//

Tried Bbopki (sugar biscuit) and it was disgustingly sweet.
Sinchon Street. the shops were all closing when we finished dinner, so no shopping :/

Went to color our hair! It was like 9.30pm by then and the shops were pretty much all closed, esp hair salons. We went to visit the ones still open, in short, the more atas and costly ones :/
bittersweet hair experience :/

REALLY EXPENSIVE HAIR DONE HERE BY THIS "EXPERT" SAMCHON, SO DON'T GO HERE COS AHJUMMAS AT SINCHON DO IT CHEAPER DURING DAYTIME!!! Gave us a "discount" bcos we said we were Haksaengs (students) and couldn't afford too much and it rounded down to 130,000W for mine. And he also discounted the hair treatment. ugh. My red hair only stayed for 2 weeks and he said he was a famous hair colorist with his own book (he showed us his book -_-) and we were so naive and bought into it. I actually thought the color would stay longer bcos i paid about 150 sgd for it but nooo. He was a fairly friendly and nice man though. Could speak very limited english.#LESSONLEARNT

TIP #8: If you want to get your hair done, go to the Ehwa Women's University(beside subway station) area, it's cheaper! Color dyeing + cut should be about $30+? (Ahjumma salons tho). Sinchon too! To identify salons, look for the word “hair” or “헤어” in English or Korean. More about korean hair salons and vocabulary here!
3am: It wasn't the red i wanted yet :

-Day 1 - <how long will blogging 11 days of korea take, oh god>

Day 2: Me and my poop-shaped bbang.

Basically we just packed and checked-out and headed to 24 Guesthouse Myeongdong (recommend! cos cute univ korean guys that speak english are the keepers of the guesthouse. It was small but homely.

TIP #9: If you're on backpacking/budget travelling like us and barely stay in, go for guesthouses/ dorms.

Took cab but he freaking went all the way to Dongdaemun History and Cultural Park area and made a big loop, insist he's gg the right way and then drop us at Chungmuro. Basically we wasted time and money on him and he had the nerve to get angry at us. Stubborn as fak. Of course we walked, with heavy luggages, asking for directions from the helpful koreans again~

Repeat: TIP #3: When cabbing, you have to be firm with them about your location because apparently; many places(restaurants/guesthouses/hotels) have the same name.

So after wasting half the day, we checked in and then headed out to Myeongdong for shopping! 24 Guesthouse Myeongdong is literally 2 minutes walk from Myeongdong street. I would like to live there :D

Dinner Time!

Oh my, Kimchi Fried Rice

JENGJENGJENG!~ JAJJANGMYEON MY SARANG~
best. noodles. ever.

my fail kiddy drawing of us on the pillar of doodles.

Went back to put our stuff and then rushed to visit Namsan Tower! By now we were pro's at asking for directions.

super fresh air

mi-nyo

Rach took like 20 plus takes for my pic and now i realise that i look like a dumpling hahaha

Heol~

this bae is everywhere, pardon my creepy face

The View! somewhat pretty or not, you decide.
It was like 10.30pm and super cold and the frosted glass and weather was just BOO.
TIP #10: For a good Namsan Tower View, it is safer to go during daytime. (my opinion). Also go visit the famous Locks of love, it's not a necessity to go up the observatory.

selca expert, J
We were the last two to leave the tower and they locked the locks area by then so we couldn't go and see them :( how wasted. that area had free(?) access too. We could've saved the money going up the observatory since there wasn't much to see due to the foggyness.

Walked home in the freezing cold while Skyping my parents and being our crazy weird funny selves on the korean streets.

-Day 2

Things we got from the airport:

1. M-PASS:

  • a card with money that allows you to board trains and buses, 20 rides a day. like all those tourist cards that are actually more expensive if you don't go to 20 places a day.
  • Applicable to Seoul Metro lines 1-9, AREX(Standard), Seoul Buses(except red)
  • Comes with discount coupons (we completely left those in the guesthouse -_-)
  • Doesn't work after the number of days you paid for. You get 5,000W deposit back if you return it. (get and return at the airport)

TIP #11: To save more money for shopping, buy T-Money Cards instead. It serves the same function apart from AREX and better.

2. T-Money:(bought this after our M-Pass Expired)
  • Convenient to buy and top-up value (train station/ kmart sells them)
  • can also come in the shape of a keychain bcos koreans are geniuses(hang on phone and you'll never forget it)
  • Can be used on Seoul Metro Lines 1-9, Buses, Taxis! and convenient stores (kmarts).
  • Utterly convenient you should get this instead

3. Olleh-egg(MUST HAVE! portable wifi):
The Olleh Counter! (pic cred to owner)
  • 8,000W per day for unlimited super fast data wifi wherever you go (for SNS and google maps)
  • Rent it at Gate 6, Arrival hall
  • Provide Credit Card Details or 200,000W as a deposit.
  • You can return it anytime, but they charge by the day. Even if you return the egg at 12.05am, you have to pay for that day. -_-
  • Battery doesn't last all day, shorter battery span during winter.
  • doesn't have connection in some areas
